Interesting Things, Rauhe Night Market

Yesterday, Travis went on his usual daily walk and found these interesting things and places:

The "micro bus"

Trolley bus

Dragon on both sides of temple entrance - a small temple near our place, next to KFC

Altar with paper lotuses

Friday night, we went to Rauhe Street night market. This place has two lanes on either side of the middle booths, and is absolutely packed. Thankfully, no mopeds are allowed but there are so many people, moving at snail speed, that it takes a great deal of time to get from one end to the other. Quite unfortunate when hungry, and looking for something specific. We had a green onion pancake with egg for dinner, as well as a Taiwan style okonomiyaki (Japanese seafood egg pancake). It was covered in the usual benito fish flakes, but also has corn, tuna, and wasabi. To cool off afterwards, we had a delicious mango and flan shaved ice. Best shaved ice ever- the ice was so fluffy it was almost creamy! And Asian flan is the best.

A friend from school told us that there was a fellow Texan making fried things, so we had to check it out:

"小美国" or Little America featuring fried oreos. There was a HUGE line for this place. They also carried fried bananas, hot dogs, hamburgers, sloppy joes, and a few other American favorites.

Dominick, the shop owner, is from Houston and has been at this for seven years. He says business is great and really enjoys his life here.

Color changing building on our way back from Rauhe to the MRT station

Delicious flaky layered taro cake from the school's bakery, filled with sweet taro paste. They have the cheapest baked goods, and everything is so delicious. To make this pastry have so many layers, a technique is used that requires dough to be rolled out, brushed with oil, folder over, rolled again, brushed, folded, rolled, and so on until the desired numbers of layers has been created. This is also how green onion pancakes are made.
